HOBSON'S CHOICE

( Pictures from the 1939 film )

The play, "Hobson's Choice", was written by Harold Brighouse and had its first performance in the USA in 1959. This musical version retains much of the original and masterful dialogue. The year is 1880, and Henry Horatio Hobson, a widower with three daughters, runs a prosperous boot shop in Chapel Street, Salford, Lancashire, England . He considers his eldest daughter, Maggie, past the marrying age but, more importantly, he wants to keep her at home because she is a marvel in the shop. Hobson's uneducated boot-hand is Willie Mossop - a master with leather and a natural-born genius at making boots. Maggie, realising Willie's qualities, decides she and Willie will get married and set up their own shop, in competition with her father's.
